What Is Claude Code

Claude Code is a way to talk to Claude — Anthropic's AI — through your computer's terminal. Important distinction: the AI does not run on your machine. Your computer sends messages to Anthropic's servers, the Claude model (like Opus 4.6) processes them, and sends the response back. Your computer is the messenger, not the brain.

So why not just use ChatGPT or Claude in a browser? Here's the difference. ChatGPT lives in a browser tab. You type, it responds, and that's it. It can't see your files. It can't organize your folders. It can't build a website on your computer. It's like texting a smart friend. Claude Code lives inside your machine. It can see your files, read your documents, create new files, build websites, send emails, and organize your entire workspace. It's like having that smart friend sitting right next to you at your desk, with full access to your computer.

That distinction is what makes Claude Code a true business tool — not just a chatbot, but an operator that can take real action on your behalf.
