There are two ways to pay for Claude Code. The first is a subscription — a flat monthly fee. $20/month for Pro, $100 for Max, $200 for Max 5x. You get a fixed amount of usage per month. When it runs out, you wait or upgrade. Simple and predictable.

The second is API — pay-per-use. Every message, every response, every thought Claude has costs tokens. No hard limits, but costs can escalate quickly. You could easily spend $1,000 in a week if you're not careful.

The recommendation: start with the Pro plan at $20/month. You don't need API keys on day one. You don't need Max. Just $20 gets you in the door and you can upgrade later once you understand your usage patterns and needs.
