2.9 Migrate to Claude Code

You've run the daily brief in Cowork. Now you'll run the exact same workflow in Claude Code — using a config file instead of a GUI. This is how builders extend what Cowork gives you into fully custom automations.
Same Workflow. Different Interface.
The daily brief you ran in Cowork works identically in Claude Code. The underlying MCP connections are the same — only the interface changes.
- Cowork uses a GUI connector panel to manage MCPs
- Claude Code uses a config file —
.mcp.json— to declare the same connections - The output of your daily brief is identical in both environments
- Claude Code lets you script, schedule, and extend beyond what Cowork supports

Step 1 — Install Claude Code
- Open VS Code
- Go to the Extensions panel (Cmd+Shift+X)
- Search for Claude Code and install it
- Once installed, open it via Cmd+Shift+P → Claude Code: Open
- Sign in with your Anthropic account
Step 2 — Create Your .mcp.json
This file tells Claude Code which MCP servers to connect — the same connectors you turned on in Cowork.
- Open your project folder in VS Code
- Create a new file at the project root named
.mcp.json - Add the following:
{
"mcpServers": {
"gmail": {
"command": "npx",
"args": ["-y", "@modelcontextprotocol/server-gmail"],
"env": {
"GMAIL_CREDENTIALS_PATH": "~/.config/gmail-credentials.json"
}
},
"google-calendar": {
"command": "npx",
"args": ["-y", "@modelcontextprotocol/server-google-calendar"],
"env": {
"GOOGLE_CREDENTIALS_PATH": "~/.config/google-credentials.json"
}
}
}
}
- Save your Google OAuth credentials into the paths referenced above
- Claude Code will detect
.mcp.jsonand connect your MCPs automatically on next open
Step 3 — Run Your Daily Brief
Open the Claude Code terminal and paste the same prompt you used in Cowork:
"Give me my daily brief. Summarise emails from the last 24 hours, list today's meetings, flag priority replies, and draft the top two."
Claude Code uses your .mcp.json connectors — the same Gmail and Calendar data. The output is identical.
The difference: from here you can script it, schedule it, or extend it with custom code.
What You Have Now
- Cowork — the GUI layer. Your team lives here.
- Claude Code — under the hood. Where you extend the system.
- The same MCPs power both — no duplicate configuration needed
- You can choose the right tool for each task and each team member
