Same Claude. Very different environments. In this lesson you'll learn what separates the two tools, which one is right for which job, and why we start with Cowork before moving to Claude Code.

Two Ways to Work With AI

There are two ways to run Claude in your business. Both use the same underlying model. The difference is the environment you work in — and that changes everything.

Claude Cowork

A desktop application designed for teams. Secure, controlled, and requires no code.

  • Simple chat interface — no terminal, no command line
  • Connectors are pre-built and admin-approved
  • Cannot call arbitrary third-party APIs — sandboxed by design
  • Admin controls who gets access to which connectors
  • Enterprise-grade — safe to roll out to your whole team
  • Best for: business owners, team members, daily automation

Claude Code

A command-line tool for builders. Powerful, flexible, and requires comfort with the terminal.

  • Runs in the terminal (VS Code, iTerm, or any CLI)
  • Can execute scripts, call APIs, and write to your filesystem
  • Far fewer limitations than Cowork — and far more responsibility
  • Steeper learning curve — requires basic command-line familiarity
  • Best for: technical builders, agency operators, advanced automation

When to Use Which

Most people need both. The question is which to reach for on a given task.

  • Daily business automation — Cowork. Email, calendar, CRM, reporting.
  • Team rollout — Cowork. Easy to share, admin controls, no onboarding friction.
  • Complex scripts + custom workflows — Claude Code. When you need to go beyond connectors.
  • Portal customers — Cowork is your primary environment.
  • Academy members — you will use both by the end of WIRE.

Why We Start With Cowork

  • No setup friction — install, sign in, connect, go
  • Your team can be using it the same day
  • The connectors cover 90% of what most businesses need
  • Once you understand Cowork, Claude Code becomes the natural next step

In Lesson 2.8 you'll install Cowork, connect Gmail and Google Calendar, and run your first real automation — the daily brief.
