Understanding the BMAD V6 Framework — What's Inside & How It Works

This video breaks down everything inside the BMAD V6 framework — the 26 agents, 68 workflows, and 5 modules — and explains why we use it as the backbone of every software project we build at our agency.

What is BMAD? It's a free, open-source framework built by enterprise-grade engineers that wraps around Claude Code (or any LLM) to make sure what you build follows proper software development practices. Instead of jumping straight into code and ending up with duplicated functions and no documentation, BMAD guides you through the same process a professional dev team would follow.

The 5 Modules:

  • BMAD Method (Core) — the original module with your full dev team agents (analyst, architect, developer, QA, project manager, scrum master, UX designer) and the greenfield/brownfield workflows
  • BMAD Builder — lets you create your own custom agents (content agents, proposal generators, health agents, anything you want)
  • Creative Intelligence Suite — brainstorming, ideation, and foundational planning tools that most people skip but shouldn't
  • Test Architect — dedicated QA and testing automation module, now separated out because proper testing is critical and massively underutilised
  • Game Dev Studio — for game development (not covered in detail in this video)

Greenfield vs Brownfield:

  • Greenfield = building something new from scratch. BMAD takes you through 4 phases: brainstorming → product requirements & UX → architecture & story planning → dev loop (build, review, QA, repeat)
  • Brownfield = working on existing software. Use Quick Flow (quick spec → quick dev) for smaller changes, or run the full process for major feature upgrades

Key concepts explained:

  • Epics — large chunks of work (e.g. authentication, dashboard, report generation)
  • Stories — smaller breakdowns within an epic (e.g. build login UI, build reset password flow)
  • Tasks — bite-sized actions within a story (e.g. create email input field, style the submit button)
  • Context injection — BMAD only loads the specific files and workflows relevant to what you're doing, keeping conversations lean and reducing hallucinations
  • Slash commands — each agent and workflow has a command (e.g. /dev, /create-agent, /bmad-help) that injects the right prompt and context automatically

Helpful commands:

  • /bmad-help — chat interface to guide you if you're stuck on what to do next
  • /dev — activate the developer agent
  • /create-agent — build your own custom agent using the BMAD structure

Why this matters: Without a framework, Claude Code will build things that work but with no central documentation, duplicated code, and no consistent architecture. BMAD solves this by creating a documentation and planning layer first, so every feature your AI builds is working from the same blueprint. It takes longer upfront but saves significant time and headaches as your project scales.

Install it yourself: One command in the terminal from the BMAD docs. It creates the full folder structure in your repo and you're ready to go.
