Skills are what turn Claude Code from a smart assistant into your actual team. They're what make it possible to automate your workflows, your business, and your daily operations.

A skill is a saved set of instructions that Claude Code can run on command. Whenever you have a repeatable workflow — writing a weekly report, organizing leads, preparing a client proposal — instead of explaining the process every time, you save it once as a skill. From that point on, you either type a slash command or just ask in plain English. Claude Code finds the relevant skill automatically.

Skills live in two places: global skills in ~/.claude/skills/ (available in every project) and project skills inside a specific project's .claude/skills/ folder (only active in that project). Each skill is a folder containing a SKILL.md file with two parts. The frontmatter at the top — name and description — is all Claude Code reads upfront to decide if the skill is relevant. The body below contains the full instructions, rules, preferences, and examples, and only gets loaded when Claude Code actually triggers the skill.

This architecture is efficient by design. Skills don't eat your context window until you use them. Claude reads only the short description at session start, then loads full instructions on demand. The more detailed your skill body is, the more consistent and high-quality your results will be. The chapter includes a live demo of creating a skill from scratch.
