Why Context Is Everything

Without context, Claude is a genius with amnesia. It is incredibly smart but knows absolutely nothing about your business, your clients, or your processes. Ask it a question and you get a generic answer that could apply to anyone.

The Business Brain is how you give Claude permanent memory about who you are and how your business works. Once it is wired, every answer Claude gives is specific to your business - your clients, your processes, your tools, your goals.

Two Layers of Context

Your Business Brain has two layers, and understanding them is the key to making this work.

The first layer is your **Global **CLAUDE.md file. It lives at ~/.claude/CLAUDE.md and it is about YOU as a person and operator. Your background, how you want Claude to communicate, references to deeper context files. This file follows you everywhere - every project, every conversation. Think of it as your identity card that Claude reads every single time.

The second layer is your **Project **CLAUDE.md file. It lives in each project's root folder and it is about THAT specific business or project. Tech stack, workflows, key commands, business-specific rules. It only loads when you are working inside that project folder.

The simplest way to think about it: Global is your identity. Project is the business playbook.

The Context Folder - Deep Knowledge on Demand

You do not dump everything into CLAUDE.md - it would get too long and unwieldy. Instead, you create a context folder (~/.claude/context/) that holds detailed files about specific topics.

For example, you might have files for team info, goals, tech stack, and partnership details. Claude reads these on demand when it needs deeper information. Your CLAUDE.md just points to them with simple references like "For team details, read context/team.md."

Why CLAUDE.md Is So Powerful

Here is the key insight. CLAUDE.md works like a system prompt that never gets compacted. In regular chat, context gets compressed over long conversations and Claude starts forgetting things. CLAUDE.md stays intact every single time - Claude always knows your business fundamentals, no matter how long the conversation runs.

Keep It Lean

Your CLAUDE.md should stay under 300 lines. Put the essentials there and move everything else into context files. Do not overthink this right now. In the next lesson, Claude builds the entire thing for you.
